Local processing by design

Timeline Visualizer reads supported location-history JSON files inside your browser. The file contents, complete route, timestamps, titles, generated preview, and exported video are not uploaded to our servers.

The real map is enabled by default. When a journey is drawn, your browser requests raster map tiles from CARTO using OpenStreetMap data. Those requests include zoom/x/y tile identifiers and ordinary network information such as your IP address and browser user agent. Tile identifiers can reveal the map areas in your selected journey to CARTO. We do not send CARTO your Timeline JSON, complete coordinate list, title, frames, or exported video. Turning on Privacy mode replaces the real map with a locally generated illustrated backdrop and stops further map-tile requests; requests completed before you enable it cannot be reversed.

OpenStreetMap and CARTO attribution is included in every preview and exported video that uses the real map.

Data retained in your browser

Imported timeline data is held in browser memory for the current session. Refreshing or closing the page clears that working data. A video is saved only when you choose to download it, and the resulting file remains on your device unless you share it.

Website operations

Our hosting provider may process ordinary technical logs such as an IP address, browser type, requested URL, timestamp, and error diagnostics to serve and secure the website. These logs are separate from the location-history JSON you open in the tool.

The site may remember non-sensitive preferences such as language or theme. It currently uses Google Analytics and Pageview to measure website traffic. Those services may receive ordinary website-use data such as an IP address, browser or device information, referrer, page URL, and timestamp, and may use browser identifiers or cookies according to their own configuration. Analytics is kept separate from the timeline tool and never includes imported coordinates, timestamps, file names, canvas contents, or exported videos.

Feedback submissions

The optional feedback form stores the description you enter, an optional contact email, the page and language from which you submit, and up to three JPEG, PNG, or WebP screenshots that you explicitly attach. Screenshots are limited to 5 MB each and 10 MB in total. They are uploaded only when you submit the form, stored in a private Cloudflare R2 bucket, and available only through an authorized administrator route. Original screenshot filenames are replaced before upload and are not retained. The feedback form never attaches your Timeline JSON, imported coordinates, preview, or exported video automatically.

Feedback text and private attachment references are stored in Cloudflare D1 while reasonably needed to review the report and improve the service. After a submission is saved, its text, page and language, and optional contact email may also be sent through Cloudflare Email Service to the site's verified operator inbox so new reports can be reviewed promptly. Screenshots are not attached to notification emails and remain available only through the authorized administrator route. Do not include passwords, payment-card details, or unnecessary personal information. You may request deletion by emailing the address below.

Accounts and payments

The current public version does not require an account and does not offer paid features. We therefore do not intentionally collect account or payment details through the timeline tool.

Sharing and sale

We do not sell personal information. We may disclose limited website-operation data only when required by law, to protect the service and its users, or to vendors that help host and secure the site under appropriate obligations.

Security and your choices

Local processing reduces exposure, but no browser or device is perfectly secure. Use a trusted device, keep the original export private, review the preview before downloading, and avoid publishing a route that reveals sensitive homes, workplaces, or routines.
