Your Google Maps Timeline is empty? Here is why.

You went to make a route video and found your Timeline blank, or you exported a file with nothing in it. This happens to a lot of people in 2026, and it is usually one of three specific reasons rather than a mistake on your side. Below are the common causes, how to tell which one is yours, and the steps that actually help, including an honest note on what cannot be recovered.

The three common causes

1.Location History was never on

If you never turned on Location History, Google recorded nothing to show, so the Timeline is empty by design. This is the most common reason, especially on a newer phone or a fresh Google account.

2.Your data moved to your phone

Google moved Timeline off the cloud and onto devices, so the desktop version and Takeout no longer show it. Your recent history may exist only in the Google Maps app on your phone, which is why a Takeout export can look empty. Export from the phone instead.

3.The 2025 data loss

A technical issue in 2025 erased some people's Timelines, and Google emailed affected users. Google confirmed that without an encrypted backup, that lost data cannot be recovered.

What you can do now

  • 1.Turn on Location History (Timeline) in Google Maps so new trips are recorded from today onward.
  • 2.Check for a cloud backup: in the Maps app, open Timeline and tap the cloud icon to restore an encrypted backup if you set one up.
  • 3.Export whatever remains on your phone and open it here, even a single recent trip makes a good video.

How to turn on Location History

  1. 1.Open the Google Maps app and tap your profile picture, then Your Timeline.
  2. 2.If it is off, follow the prompt to turn on Location History (Timeline).
  3. 3.Optionally turn on the encrypted cloud backup so you have a copy if you switch phones.

Questions people ask

Can I recover deleted Timeline data?

Only if you had an encrypted cloud backup, which you can restore in the Maps app. Without a backup, deleted history cannot be recovered by any tool.

Why did my Timeline disappear?

Usually the move to on-device storage or the 2025 data-loss issue, and sometimes Location History was simply never turned on.

Why is my Takeout export empty?

Since Timeline moved onto devices, Takeout may no longer include recent data. Export from the Google Maps app on your phone instead.

How do I avoid losing it again?

Keep Location History on and turn on the encrypted cloud backup, and export a JSON copy now and then to keep your own.
